To Our Subscribers,
Thank you for following So Nobly Advanced and for joining us in our effort to carry forward the stories of the Civil War generation. We are sincerely grateful for your interest, encouragement, and continued support.
Over the past several weeks, we have been working on something both exciting and deeply meaningful—an undertaking that we believe can make an important contribution to the preservation and advancement of Civil War veteran memory.
The project began, as many worthwhile historical investigations do, with a single individual and a small collection of surviving evidence. From there, the story has continued to expand.
We have been examining original military and postwar records, studying photographs and historical documents, tracing connections among veterans and the communities to which they returned, and working with materials that have not been widely seen or interpreted. Each new source has added another dimension to the story—not only of one veteran, but also of the ways Civil War soldiers remembered their service, preserved the memory of their comrades, and ensured that their experiences would not be forgotten.
Our work is extending beyond the preparation of a traditional blog article. We are also exploring ways to organize, preserve, and present this material so that readers like yourselves can engage more directly with the surviving historical record. Our goal is not simply to recount what happened, but to create an experience through which the original documents, places, relationships, and individual voices can be examined together.
There is still considerable research and development ahead, and we are not quite ready to reveal the full scope of the project. We can say, however, that it represents exactly the kind of work we hoped So Nobly Advanced would make possible: careful primary-source research, meaningful collaboration, responsible preservation, and the use of modern tools to make the lives of Civil War veterans more accessible to the public.
We look forward to sharing much more in the weeks ahead.
Until then, thank you for following our work, supporting the mission, and helping us carry forward what remains unfinished.
With gratitude,
– Vince & Alex
